Book Killing Season: A Gripping Serial Killer Thriller (Violet Darger Book 2) Review :

Killing Season – Vargas & McBainThere’s nothing I like better than a good mystery/police procedural and these two deliver in spades. I discovered these writers accidently on one of the discounted e-books websites, and I can say that I am now a big fan and will continue to follow this series as the stories are published. The main character in these books is Violet Darger, fledgling profiler for the FBI. In this book, Violet is called to consult on two separate shooting sprees that have left multiple victims dead, a city on the verge of panic, and no way of guessing what the shooters next target will be. Violets job is to profile the perpetrator, and get into his head to find a way to stop him. But how do you stop a killer you can’t see, and who leaves no evidence? The twists and turns, and gritty reality throughout this book had me turning pages through the night. Un-put-downable! I cannot wait for this series to grow! If you love Sandford, Slaughter, Kava, Stelljes and Deaver, you’ll LOVE Vargas & McBain!!
I usually try to include a little humor in my reviews, but as this novel reads like a turning point of sorts I'll try to keep this serious. The first work of this series was, I thought perfectly written, entertaining, and suspenseful. This entry I find the same. I can't say enough about plots and characters, except the major players were depicted as consistent from the first book, which gives them life. Think for a moment how hard it is to consistently portray a fictional character in such a way that they are believable as a person to the point where others accept them as such. Achieving this once is a feat, twice or more is art.Obviously the book is a crime novel, with the requisite cast of law enforcement, victims, criminals, and bystanders. It begins with a horrific crime and ends with resolution. The meat of the story, how the characters reach the resolution is the entertainment for the reader. Violet Darger is a wonderful instrument for us to experience the events, not only of the law enforcement machinery, but also her personal life. She is fleshed out in full for us to enjoy. If your tastes in reading run towards suspense, tension, or true or fictional crime stories you can't go wrong with her escapades. Supporting characters act as both a hindrance, and a help throughout. They are interesting and imbued with their own usually colorful personalities, habits and distinctive presentations. No one is spared an idiosyncrasy or two. Now, the reason I love the fruit of this couple's labor is that each story they tell reads as naturally as if I had written it for myself. I've read many fictional tales and have questioned many of them as well. I assume this happens to us all. It's not the questioning of motive or decisions made by characters that we all may wonder about for the purposes of the tale, but the mechanics of writing, how the story is presented to the reader that I find so important. The story must be written in such a way that there are no jarring errors, no missing words, no awkward turn of phrase to jolt the reader from the telling of the tale. This one part of the art of writing is paramount in it's importance.Perhaps I should be lauding the proof reader or editor of this work, and I would certainly grant them the accolades they are due, but I suspect the authors work hard and long to provide their readers with a solid tale. I mentioned earlier that I thought this novel was a turning point and by that I mean the work is so well written I hope the series continues for a long time, the authors have found their voice here, and it's a joy to experience.Someday I fully expect to be on my deathbed, doctors and nurses gathered round machines to keep me alive, waiting for that death rattle to escape my throat. My heart is close to flat lining, but I still have two chapters of the latest Violet Darger novel to read.A man has to have his priorities, after all.Oh, and "bu, bu bum, bum bum bum bum"!
