Ebook About Evil lives in a traveling carnival roaming the Depression-era South. But the carnival’s newest act, a peculiar young woman with latent magical powers, may hold the key to defeating it. Her time has come.Abandoned by her family, alone on the wrong side of the color line with little to call her own, Eliza Meeks is coming to terms with what she does have. It’s a gift for communicating with animals. To some, she’s a magical tender. To others, a she-devil. To a talent prospector, she’s a crowd-drawing oddity. And the Bacchanal Carnival is Eliza’s ticket out of the swamp trap of Baton Rouge.Among fortune-tellers, carnies, barkers, and folks even stranger than herself, Eliza finds a new home. But the Bacchanal is no ordinary carnival. An ancient demon has a home there too. She hides behind an iridescent disguise. She feeds on innocent souls. And she’s met her match in Eliza, who’s only beginning to understand the purpose of her own burgeoning powers.Only then can Eliza save her friends, find her family, and fight the sway of a primordial demon preying upon the human world. Rolling across a consuming dust bowl landscape, Eliza may have found her destiny.Book Bacchanal Review :
I’m about a third of the way into the book... it’s an interesting story about a young black woman with a gift for communicating with animals, which catapults her into becoming one of the “side show freaks” at a local carnival. I love her relationship with her pet Pygmy marmoset monkey, Mico, and her reflections about the new sphere of humans and animals she has joined at the carnival. I find that the author is very true to the jargon of Depression era people, making no attempt to be “politically correct” and tweak her words to fit the values of the 21st century. Jargon contemporary to the 1930s is used, such as “cooch show”, and very typical of what “carneys” would call a burlesque show. And best of all... no swear words whatsoever... just plain old, clean talk, making it even more appropriate for this 1930s era story. I look forward to reading more of the book. It was the best choice for me out of all the titles this month! The book is made up of 42 short chapters, often following a different character when a new chapter begins. There is a prologue at the beginning that gives you a bit of story background and some foreshadowing, and then the first chapter begins, set a few years later. The language reflects the time and place, the 1930s South, but the story is still very easy to read and the pace moves along quickly. The story is primarily about Liza, a young woman with the magical ability to sort of communicate with animals, a power she is still trying to figure out how to use. With her plucky pygmy marmoset by her side, she runs off to join a carnival and escape her unpleasant living situation. This setting and plot really made me think of an animated Disney-type movie, as it shares many similar elements as some popular animated adventures; just maybe without the comedy/jokes. Liza makes some new friends at the carnival, and learns more about her gift and the mysterious carnival owner. I wouldn't exactly say that the book is kid-friendly, as there are several adult-themed references, but the language is pretty tame and there isn't really anything terribly graphic. This was a fun, easy to read, enjoyable story. Again, I feel like if you like the typical Disney movie plot, especially with magic involved, then you might enjoy this book.
